Young Jonn is trending everywhere and for a very good reason. Mavin Records boss Don Jazzy recently gave him a massive shout out, describing the Akwa Ibom born star as an artist with zero bad songs. The statement immediately caught attention online and sparked conversations among fans and music lovers.
Young Jonn, whose real name is John Saviours Udomboso, did not take the praise lightly. He acknowledged the shout out with gratitude, while fans also flooded social media with reactions, many agreeing that the producer turned singer has built a solid and consistent catalogue over the years.
Young Jonn belongs to a rare group of Nigerian creatives who started out as music producers and successfully transitioned into full performing artists. Like Phyno, Don Jazzy, Tekno, Maleek Berry, Runtown and Pheelz, he proved that crossing that line is possible with patience, talent and persistence.
His journey into music started early in life. Young Jonn began playing musical instruments as a child in church before forming a small band with his brothers in Ibadan. They would visit studios, where he made random beats while they rapped over them, learning the basics of music creation through experimentation.
A major turning point came when someone connected him to a studio in Lagos. From 2012, he became what many would call a studio rat at Hit Factory, the same studio where Olamide recorded the album Baddest Guy Ever Liveth. Young Jonn would often sit quietly in the corner, watching the likes of Pheelz, Olamide, Reminisce and others work. After they left, he would try to recreate whatever he observed, sharpening his skills through practice.
At one point, Olamide listened to his beats but felt they were not good enough yet. Instead of giving up, Young Jonn kept working. About a year later, Olamide randomly invited him over. After struggling to find the right beat, Young Jonn mentioned a random beat he had saved on his phone. Olamide listened to it and that moment changed everything. The song Story For The Gods was recorded in June 2014.
From there, Young Jonn went on to produce several major hits for YBNL including Bobo, Gbese and Efejoku, even though he was never officially signed to the label. His sound became a key part of the era that shaped modern street pop in Nigeria.
In 2022, he joined Chocolate City and made a bold move by fully transitioning into a performing artist. That decision paid off when his song Dada featuring Davido went viral and introduced him to a wider audience as a singer, not just a producer.
Interestingly, Young Jonn never originally planned to be an artist. He only recorded songs for fun until his close friends convinced him to stop wasting his talent. That push led to the release of Dada and the start of a new chapter in his career.
Today, with Don Jazzy’s endorsement and growing public appreciation, Young Jonn’s journey stands as a powerful reminder that consistency, humility and patience can turn quiet beginnings into loud success.
