Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy encountered a brief hold-up at a Moroccan airport earlier this week, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revealed. The incident occurred just as the singer arrived in Morocco to headline a major Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Fan Zone concert in Rabat.
According to CAF boss Patrice Motsepe, Burna Boy was stopped by customs officials after they noticed his heavy gold jewellery during a routine check at the airport. The officials flagged the accessories for further scrutiny, which led to a temporary delay before completing the entry process.
Motsepe said he was called in to help resolve the issue after the hold-up began. In his own words:
“Recently I was called that I need to intervene because Burna Boy was stopped at the airport after customs officers noticed his heavy and beautiful gold jewellery. I intervened and it was resolved.”
Despite the brief challenge, Burna Boy was able to continue with his plans and later performed as the headline act at the TotalEnergies AFCON Fan Zone concert in Rabat on January 16. The event also featured Ghanaian artist Stonebwoy and Moroccan performers Stormy and Jaylann.
Fans and follow-up coverage suggest the matter was not treated as a legal issue but rather a standard customs procedure that was quickly cleared up with the help of Motsepe’s intervention.
The concert formed part of the AFCON 2025 festivities in Morocco, blending football celebration with music performances from top artists across the continent.
