Nigerian singer Oxlade, born Ikuforiji Olaitan Abdulrahman, says his Christian upbringing and early involvement in church music are the reasons he has never smoked or used hard drugs. The Ku Lo Sa hitmaker made these comments in an interview this week with gospel singer Tim Godfrey, where he reflected on how his background shaped his life and career.
Oxlade explained that his journey in music began long before he became a global Afrobeats star. He grew up deeply involved in church life, serving in several choir roles from a young age and leading different musical groups as he got older. In the interview, he described how those early experiences helped shape his values and personal choices as he grew into an adult and a public figure.
The singer spoke openly about his lifestyle, making it clear that he has never used tobacco or hard drugs, and linking that choice directly to his faith and upbringing. In his own words, Oxlade said:
“I don’t smoke. I don’t take drugs. I was a choir coordinator for every age group — children’s church, teen church, the youth choir and the mass choir.”
He added that music and worship were constant parts of his life, and that being raised in a family with strong musical and spiritual roots kept him grounded even as he rose to fame. He noted that his grandmother was a deaconess and singer, his grandfather was a multi-instrumentalist, and his mother could sing and dance, creating a home environment rich in faith and creative expression.
Oxlade also spoke about the role of divine guidance in his career, saying that his success including touring multiple cities with his debut album has been possible because of God’s blessings. He said this has given him confidence and peace of mind as he navigates life in the music industry.
